Van Gogh and Hiroshige Exhibit at Pinacothèque-Paris, "Rêves du Japon" 2012-2013

I felt faint and feverish at viewing the works of Van Gogh and Hiroshige...Is this due partially to the remnants of a powerful Paris winter cold, making by brain swell, and my cashmere turtleneck feel very close? February 19, 2013

Or is it that the presence of the combination of Van Gogh's energetic very layered brush strokes, and first time exposure to the elegance of Hiroshige's dizzyingly complex composition, can introduce haze to the brain?

As is popularly discussed, Van Gogh suffered from numerous brain disorders, bipolarity, schizophrenia, hallucinations ... and the authors of this exhibit propose that Japanese art was a kind of escape for Van Gogh, a voyage of the mind ... as he was unable to take much of a physical voyage.

Numerous letters by Van Gogh at the exhibit, is evidence that he thought often of the series of Japanese paintings in his studio.

I was told that the Japanese approach to a painting is a journey to a kind of meditation.  The rigorous rules of elaborate composition of figures is a way to move one along to different place.

Van Gogh painted most of these pieces in the warmth of Arles, in southern France, and later in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, where he asked to stay.

The works featured here date primarily 1880's,1890's for Van Gogh, 1830's through 1850's for Hiroshige.  Photos taken at Pinacothèque, before the goons could get me, and from the Exhibition Catalogue.
