Dalí added Velasquez to his collection of many obsessions.  He painted numerous interpretations of Velasquez' images of court life, the different princesses, their attendant ladies, and even of the dwarves who played court jester to the young Princess.  One re-interpretation by Dalí of a painting of a young princess represents her as a Mayan deity.
